Medicare Supplement Plans (Medigap Insurance) helps in many ways to cover the 20% that Medicare Part B doesn't cover. Additionally, supplement plans are very portable. You can see any doctor in the U.S. that accepts Medicare and you are not restricted to a specific service area.

Most Medicare supplement plans will also cover you for emergencies and urgent care outside of the country if you have been outside the U.S. for less than 60 days.

Medicare Supplement Plans have a premium you have to pay in addition to your Part B premium. The premium your supplement plan charges you will vary depending on your age and health condition. Premiums can range from around $100-$600+ per month depending on the type of plan you enroll in.

There are 8 different Medicare Supplement Plans on the market. They are Plan A, B, D, G, K, L, M, and N. Plan K, L, M, and N have a significant amount of cost sharing. In this case you may be better off with a Medicare Advantage Plan.

If you are going to get a Medicare Supplement Plan you might as well go all the way. Plan G is the most comprehensive of all the plans. After you pay a $226 annual deductible this plan covers absolutely everything for the rest of the year.

Keep in mind that if you get a Medicare Supplement Plan you will need to purchase a separate Medicare Part D plan if you wish to have prescription drug coverage.
